Ways to Cope With the Loss of a Loved One

Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be a devastating time in one's life. It is often a tragic experience, but knowing how to deal with the situation can be very beneficial to any human being. A good first step is to express some of the emotions you're feeling to those closest to you. Keeping this pain inside can lead to more sadness and even depression. Speak to a professional, a family member, or a close friend about what you are feeling. It also can help to keep a journal of how you are feeling if you are not ready to talk about the loss yet.

Do things to preserve memories of your loved one. Plant a tree or a garden to create a memorial or tribute in honor of the person. Another option is to create a memory box or folder that you can put special things in that remind you of the person, or you can include letters written to that person expressing thoughts or feelings that were left unsaid.

Support groups are beneficial, and there are many specific support groups that help people with different kinds of grief. Most towns and cities will have at least one. Perhaps the worst thing a person can do is to remain alone with their thoughts and feelings. By letting them out, you're helping to begin the healing process and you will likely feel a bit better. And always know that as time goes by, the loss will be easier to deal with.
